Malawi - Living Trees of Livingstonia
In Autumn 2016, we became one of the partners in a three-year ambitious project operating across 21 schools in the Rumphi District of the Northern Region of a Malawi. The project is funded by the Scottish Government, is in partnership with Thrive Scotland and Rumphi organisation Living Trees of Livingstonia, and the project brings together a community in Edinburgh with communities in Rumphi.
The project aim is to improve the environment, reduce poverty and increase school attendance through School Orchard Committees, which will establish orchards, sell some produce and channel profits into improving their schools. Each School Orchard Committee will consist of parents and teachers of the school pupils, ensuring local ownership.
Living Trees of Livingstonia is innovative in addressing a wide range of environment, employment, nutrition, education and girls’ education. In piloting profit making orchards owned and run by schools, the project will prove that Malawi can meet its most urgent needs independently and sustainably.
